Dangerous Goods Storage Rules NSW 2027
NSW dangerous goods storage comes under the Work Health and Safety Regulation 2025, which replaced 2017. Placards start above the placard quantity, such as 250 L of category 2 flammable liquids, and a manifest above 2,500 L.
Registers, manifests and sign orders that still cite 2017 point at a law that is gone. The placard and manifest quantities are the same as in the model WHS regulations.
These are the rules in force going into 2027.
The regulation that applies
The Work Health and Safety Regulation 2025 (NSW) [2025-440] repeals and replaces the Work Health and Safety Regulation 2017 (NSW). The parts that matter for signs are:
- s 349 Outer warning placards - requirement to display
- s 350 Placard - requirement to display
- Schedule 11 Placard and manifest quantities
- Schedule 13 Placard requirements
Hazardous chemicals are classified by their GHS category.

Over the placard quantity
A HAZCHEM outer warning placard at each entrance emergency services may use, and placards at the tanks and stores. What each one shows and where it goes is on hazchem signage requirements.
Over the manifest quantity
A manifest and site plan, and the regulator notified. What goes in them is on dangerous goods manifest and site plan requirements.
Updating your paperwork
Anything that names the 2017 regulation, such as a chemical register, a manifest, a site induction or a sign order, is worth updating to the 2025 regulation.

Common questions
Which regulation covers dangerous goods storage in NSW?
The Work Health and Safety Regulation 2025 (NSW). It replaced the 2017 regulation, which is repealed.
Are the NSW placard quantities different from other states?
No. They are the same as the model WHS regulations used in Queensland, SA, Tasmania, the ACT and the NT. Victoria and Western Australia use their own.
Does the placard requirement start at the quantity or above it?
Above it. The NSW regulation uses the word exceeds.
