Dangerous Goods Placard Sizes 2027
HAZCHEM and bulk placard letters must be at least 100 mm high, packaged store class labels at least 100 mm a side, and bulk placard class labels 250 mm a side in the WHS states. Source: WHS Regulations Schedule 13.
The law sets the size of what is printed on a dangerous goods placard: the height of the letters and the size of the class label. It does not set the size of the panel. Pick the panel that fits the wording at those sizes.
These are the rules in force going into 2027.
Minimum sizes
| Placard | Letters | Class label |
|---|---|---|
| HAZCHEM outer warning | At least 100 mm high, red (Signal Red, AS 2700S R13) on white or silver | None |
| Packaged store placard | No wording | Sides at least 100 mm, in the ADG form and colour, on white or silver |
| Bulk placard | At least 100 mm high, black on white. At least 50 mm when the shipping name needs two lines | WHS states: sides at least 250 mm, or at least 200 mm when a subsidiary hazard label is shown (that label at least 150 mm) |
| Combustible liquid placard | COMBUSTIBLE LIQUID, at least 100 mm high, black on white or silver | None |
A class label is measured along one edge of the diamond, not from corner to corner.
Why the panel size follows the wording
A bulk placard carries a shipping name, a UN number and a Hazchem code at 100 mm or more, plus a class label. A long shipping name, or a subsidiary hazard label, needs a bigger panel. Write out the wording first, then choose the size. A wide panel with small letters does not meet the rule, so check the letter height on the artwork, whatever you buy.
