Placards and Labels: What's the Difference?
Dangerous goods placards and labels both carry hazard symbols, so they're easy to mix up. They do different jobs, though. Here's the quick rundown.
Marks a place
Placards and Signs
A placard goes up on a wall, door, gate or storage area to show what's kept there, so workers and emergency services can see it before they walk in.
Placards come as a 270 × 270 mm sign in aluminium or polypropylene. The same design also comes as a self-adhesive vinyl sticker in 250 × 250 or 270 × 270 mm.
Goes on containers
Label Rolls
Labels are small stickers that go on the containers themselves: bottles, drums, cartons and packages. They come in rolls of 500, which makes them handy when you've got a lot of containers to label.
Dangerous goods class labels and GHS labels both come in 20 × 20, 50 × 50 or 100 × 100 mm.
In short: placards and signs mark a place. Labels go on containers. Plenty of sites use both.
